TL;DR
Since Google shared their intent for the next billion internet users, some African developers thought this was pointing right at them and they needed to act fast. The mission to bring the next billion users from Africa to the internet kicked off a storm of enthusiasm. This community event turned into a success story and this is a summary of what happened.
It took nearly four years, four proposed standards, the formation of a community group, and a funding campaign to pay for development, but we finally got what we've been clamoring for—a solution for responsive images baked into browsers. Now the hard work begins.
This year at SXSW, we’re infusing Cloudinary’s powerful Visual APIs to the SXSW Hackathon, where teams compete on high-tech creativity during a straight 24-hour programming event. Everyone knows the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. But what most people don’t realize about images is what needs to be taken into consideration when using them on websites and in mobile apps.
Images – if you’re a developer, there’s no doubt that at one time or another, you’ve probably worked with a lot of image files, and may have been tasked with ensuring a top-notch user experience or continually improving website and app performance. You may have posed questions on online message boards, or sought advice from your developer colleagues. But there hasn’t been a conference that solely focused on image management…until now.
Last week, 15 of us here at Cloudinary headed back to Las Vegas for the annual AWS re:Invent conference. We returned as exhibitors again this year since we had such a successful experience in 2015, when we introduced Cloudinary to many new companies that could benefit from our image and video management tools.
If it’s June, Cloudinary must be in the throes of conference season. In a recent blog post, we discussed how we WOW’d the crowd with our fully automated image management tools, exhibiting at Velocity Santa Clara. But that wasn’t the only place we have been wowing developers and the cloud community; we also attended two events in Israel last month.
Attending our first Velocity Web Performance Conference, we wanted to WOW attendees with the Cloudinary solution. And WOW them we did, with the announcement of our new “Images Solved” enhancements, which offer fully automated content- and context-aware image adaptation.
